Major issues such as pollution, deforestation, species loss and global warming are all side-effects of the activities that provide consumers with the endless array of goods on the market today. This book reveals that, far from hampering creativity, taking stock of environmental issues can produce designs of "total beauty". The author examines a diverse range of products from lipsticks to cars using icons and a scoring system to assess their "sustainability".

Agenda for a New Economy
San Francisco, CA: Berrett-Koehler Publishers.

Today’s economic crisis is the worst since the Great Depression. However, as David Korten shows in this timely new book, the steps being taken to address it including pouring trillions of dollars into bailouts for the Wall Street institutions that created the mess – do nothing to deal with the reality of a failed economic system. The financial failure now in the public spotlight is only the tip of the iceberg. The system’s social and environmental failures are even more destructive. Putting patches on a failed system is like treating a cancer with band-aids.

Cradle to Cradle Remaking the Way We Make Things
New York: North Point Press.

How can we avoid environmental disaster? Nowadays, in the home, most of us do our bit: we recycle. But what about industry, where the real damage is done? The strategy is the same: ‘reduce, resize, reuse’ – we try to minimize the damage. But there is a limitation to this well-intentioned approach: it maintains the one-way, ‘cradle to grave’ manufacturing model of the Industrial Revolution, the very model that creates immense amounts of waste and pollution in the first place. What we need is a major rethink, a new approach which directly combats the problem rather than slowly perpetuating it. An exciting, simple and groundbreaking new vision, Cradle to Cradle offers this approach.

Teaching Guide for the Designer’s Atlas of Sustainability.
Washington, DC: Island Press.

Designing for sustainability is an innovation shaping both the design industry and design education today. Yet architects, product designers, and other key professionals in this new field have so far lacked a resource that addresses their sensibilities and concerns. "The Designer's Atlas of Sustainability" now explores the basic principles, concepts, and practice of sustainable design in a visually sophisticated and engaging style. The book tackles not only the ecological aspects of sustainable design - designers' choice of materials and manufacturing processes have a tremendous impact on the natural world - but also the economic and cultural elements involved.

State of the World 2010
London: Earthscan.

Many of the environmental and social problems we face today are symptoms of a deeper systemic failing: a dominant cultural paradigm that encourages living in ways that are often directly counter to the realities of a finite planet. This paradigm, typically referred to as 'consumerism,' has already spread to cultures around the world and has led to consumption levels that are vastly unsustainable. If this pattern spreads further there will be little possibility of solving climate change or other environmental problems that are poised to dramatically disrupt human civilization.

DEQ (2009)
Drinking Water: A Comparison of Bottled and Tap Water Using Life Cycle Analysis.
A report by Franklin Associates.
DEQ has completed a study that compares a wide range of environmental impacts (including greenhouse gas emissions) of drinking water from the tap, 5-gallon reusables, and single-use bottles. The study confirms that while recycling bottles is environmentally preferable to disposing of them, buying bottled water and recycling the bottles is not the best environmental choice. Drinking water from the tap (waste prevention) typically has substantially lower impacts in most categories of environmental impact.
